What Happens When We Forget the World’s Memos and Begin Living With a New Mindset What Happens When We Forget the World’s Memos and Begin Living With a New Mindset

Welcome to the seventh episode of The Story Project podcast! I’m so excited to welcome my guest Dr. Ashley Dubois! Dr. Ashley is from Fort Walton, Florida and in the middle of doing a startup!

A little about Dr. Ashley...

Dr. Ashley Dubois is a proud native of the “Emerald Coast”, located in Fort Walton Beach, FL. She obtained a BS degree in Microbiology and Cell Science from University of Florida and a Masters degree in Medical Sciences from University of South Florida. Dr. Dubois graduated with her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2015 from the prestigious New York University in Manhattan, New York with a senior year concentration in Aesthetics Honors.

Upon graduating from NYU, Dr. Dubois had the privilege to serve America’s Veterans at the Orlando VA Medical Center through an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program. During her residency, she received extensive training in dental implant surgery and restoration, periodontal surgery, and prosthodontics. Dr. Dubois is a Fellow of The International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the largest dental implant education organization worldwide.

After associating in private practice for the past several years, Dr. Dubois is ecstatic to be pursuing her dream of practice ownership. She is the founder of Shoreline Dental Studio, which is expected to open in spring 2022 in her hometown. Dr. Dubois and her husband, Dr. Jon Barbee, are blessed to have three wonderful children- Olivia, Sophia and Levi. Together, they enjoy exploring the outdoors with their hound dog, Louie.

Ashley’s Story…

My conversation with Dr. Ashley was like sitting down with a friend I’ve known for years! We only just met over the summer at a Dental Nachos event where we immediately connected on all-the-things. That’s typically how I select podcast guests...if we bond over a glass of wine, we can have an authentic conversation in front of a camera, too.

Being a Florida native, Dr. Dubois brings a warm southern charm that is calming and kind, however, don’t let that fool you! She is also a second-degree blackbelt in taekwondo and is unashamedly showing her girls how to be strong and defend themselves, both literally and metaphorically.

Dr. Ashley was inspired to study dentistry through her own personal experience as a young girl. She had crooked teeth which influenced her shyness and affected her self-confidence. Working with an orthodontist helped her regain a beautiful smile and the inner confidence she needed. This positive experience influenced her to want to do the same for others.

We dove into the heart of our conversation and discussed the power of mindset as women, mothers and entrepreneurs. One of my favorite authors on the subject of perspectives and mindset is Glennon Doyle who recently authored the book Untamed. In one chapter, Glennon shares her experiences with the “worlds memos” and expectations placed on us from a young age. She goes on to discuss multiple memos that shape women’s mindsets today and one that I find so relevant is the memo of: selflessness. The idea that true love and devotion is losing ourselves in sacrifice to everyone around us (our partner, kids, community, family). The idea that sacrificing our own self-care, dreams, careers, goals and ideas will help us somehow show the people in our lives that we love them. Glennon goes on to say, “We do not need more selfless women, what we need right now is women who have detoxed themselves so completely from the world’s expectations that they are full of nothing but themselves”. Who they are truly meant to be.
